My heart was running on empty
Along the highway of life
You took me for a ride
The day I took you for my wife
I needed you , but you treated me…..like a beat up Chevrolet
You made me suffer…. like a mean ol’ mother muffler
And then you drove away
CHORUS
I made it through ----the mud sweat and tears
I made it through------ the Budwiser years
I made it through---- the flood of my fears
When it hurt to be alone
You took away------ your tender fender kissin
You took away------ the key to your ignition
You took away----- your pump and plugged my piston
You said I’d never make it on my own.
My wheels were spinning so I towed my heart to the local garage that day
A 12 step sign up put me in allignment, and got me on my way
The worst was soon up, I changed my tune up….. one day at a time
From the grease to the grime, to the finish line
Till the horn I was tootin was mine
CHORUS
At last I’m in the driver’s seat
And I don’t mind confessin’
It took time to clear my mind
And see you --as a blessin’
You know, I owe it all to you
For who I am today
And I thank my lucky cars for the day you drove away
CHORUS
Songwriting Inspiration:
In 2008, 60% of all newlyweds will end in divorce within one year.
No one seems to be writing divorce songs Who of us hasn’t been dumped? I think this could be the AA theme song. There is a positive side to the separation. I learned to bless and eventually thank the person for leaving… because without their departure, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. When you become grateful to the person for their leaving, you move yourself to a higher and happier place
